This is the End, My Only Friend, the End…. of #NaNoWriMo2014

Don’t worry- I’m not going to kill myself. I’m just being dramatic…or theatrical? It’s all how you look at it. Dramatic bad, theatrical good.  I would have to say the month of November 2014 was by far one of the most insane ones on record in recent years. Lost glasses, major catfights, lost “friends,” broken noses, blood and gore. You can’t make this shit up.

As many of you know, I took on the challenge of attempting to complete a 50,000 word novel for #NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) last year. I got to about 25,000 words and stopped. It was much too emotional and not good for family relationships. This year I said I would try again and I did. The first week I wrote like  a fiend and was emotionally drained. I knew I could not keep this up for three more weeks so I switched the topic from a drama about religion to comedy about sex. GASP! Once I did the words flowed.

The book is about a single mom named Danni Lynn who has to move back to her gossipy, small hometown of Bakersville after falling on some hard times. Danni Lynn lives in a trailer park with her 8-year-old daughter Sapphire, and she sells adult toys for a living through Tasteful Tickles. Her arch-enemy and fiercest competitor lives across the street and wreaks havoc in town on a daily basis. Danni Lynn seeks revenge but her insatiable appetite for men and danger just might get her into real trouble this time…. DUN DUN DUN!

I started the book a week behind but kept on truckin’ regardless of mood swings, a weekend-long Irish dance competition, Thanksgiving, DJ gigs, being Assistant Producer on an indie film, a full-time job, family and a puppy to care for. I met some amazing people who inspired and challenged me, made me laugh more than I have in a while and kept the fire lit under my butt along the way. And…. drum roll please? budundundundund……. I DID IT! Thank you fellow Nano-ers Rekka, Patti, Roman, Nicole and Charles!

Thank you also to my friends who also watched my progress and endured much of my crazy as I also attempted (and failed) to quit carbs. Wine was replaced with rum. Serotonin was replaced with major mood swings. Goofy was replaced with batshit crazy, yet you are still my friends. You know who you are.

Most times during the process I was completely lost in my main character. Call it “method writing” instead of “method acting” because  at times I felt I was Danni Lynn, a single mom of a young child, trying to make it on my own while haters try to bring me down. The similarities of fantasy land and real life can definitely be noted here. My husband works nights so many times I do feel like a single mom… still driving around my one child…left alone a lot…. I won’t go on. You will have to read the book when it is published (Not “if” but “when.” I won’t take “if” for an answer).

Most of all thank you to my muse who I went to for advice, for inspiration for encouragement and words of wisdom. Without this person half of my story would not have been written. Without this person I would not have fought off all the crap life threw at me and come out the other side the victor; stronger and wiser. Unlike the muses of the classic literature days, no sex or passion was involved, just positive encouragement and friendship. So thank you, truly. You know who you are.

What happens now? I spend the next two months editing before sending it to a “professional editor” to tweak it some more and then we shop it around to publishers.  I also have two other projects in the works– both movie scripts. But I can’t get lost in one of the characters or I will get murdered and if I get lost in the other I will drown. (that’s a hint)

So here’s to remaining sane as I juggle these three projects during “the most wonderful time of the year.” I’m hoping to be done with at least one by the end of this year. Fingers crossed, Orange Tundras poured, cowboy boots in the air! Hee haw!
