Who is Wendi Pop Rock?

I’m a married mother of three awesome kids (1 girl & 2 boys) and mom to an adorable 1 black lab/terrier rescue puppy named Sadie. I’m not going to ramble on with witty remarks and snarky catch phrases on this “About Me” page about how I’m a “Mommy Blogger” who is also “self-deprecating wino” (all of which are true), because I’ve always hated labels and never quite fit into the rigid box people have tried to stuff me in.

My three kids (above) are my proudest achievement in life and I love them more than words can say. Through triumphs and trials we have grown stronger as a family, especially with what we are facing now…..

On Feb. 4, 2015 I was found out that I have breast cancer. But not the type that 80% of women are diagnosed with. I have a rare and aggressive type that only 1% of women get called Metaplastic Carcinoma. It is also Triple Negative which means my only treatment is hard, long rounds of chemo for 16 weeks followed by 6 weeks of radiation.

I would have never thought I would be going through this at this stage of my life. There is no history of cancer in my family and I just had a mammogram less than a year prior to finding them lump. I go every year since the age of 40 and every year it is clear. But here I am, ready to fight the uninvited and unwelcome evil that has invaded my body.

On Feb. 17, 2015 I had lumpectomy surgery to remove the tumor. On Apr. 9, I begin 16 weeks of chemo followed by 6 weeks of radiation. It will be a long hard journey but I will get through it. Even when I am “done”with treatments in mid-September  I will never be truly “done” because this type of cancer is known to come back and spread to other parts of the body. But not if I can help it. I am fighting hard and raising awareness. I am eating healthy and getting treated by the best doctors. And I have an army of prayer warriors, the most amazing, supportive and loving husband and an incredible family and friends behind me cheering me on.

By day I work in a church as Director of Children & Family Ministries. By night I am a fiction writer and a marketing maven. This was the cover (below) to one I was writing a few years back. I have about three works that are halfway finished. My goal for this year is to have them ALL done by the end of the year- no matter how crappy I think they may seem. That’s what editors are for! 🙂

I sing, play bass and love karaoke. I’m stuck in the 80s and I don’t care. But not the stonewashed denim, big hair White Snake and Dokken 80s; more like the pale-faced, red lipped, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy goth girl 80s. I’m the youngest of six, raised in a religious household. My only brother taught me all I need to know about cool music and I believe that music is what saved me from some dark times. My husband taught me about metal and the 80s bands I made fun of kids liking in high school ’cause I was a new waver and they were rockers. He’s by far the coolest dude I know.

This is my third attempt at writing a blog and I’m hoping three’s a charm. The first blog I launched was on Blogspot and was mostly about music and my angsty teen years. The second was on WordPress and had some pretty funny stuff too but I deleted a bunch of posts when a local coo-coo started using my blog posts and “About Me” as ammo in an online word war in a public forum.  I put all the posts in the trash folder, intending to go back after the war was over. When I finally returned, alas, POOF! They were gone. Lesson learned. ALWAYS back up your writing!

Since then, I have joined a couple of writing groups and was given some really good advice:

#1) Don’t delete, don’t apologize

#2) Don’t let anyone tell you not to write “their” story. If you were there, it is your story too.

#3) Ignore the trolls, don’t engage, there’s no arguing with a crazy person.

I said I wasn’t going to ramble. I lied. Not intentionally, but you get it.

OH YEAH! I never told you how I got the nickname Wendi Pop Rock. Back in the 80s when mix tapes were wicked cool, this really cute boy made me my very first one. On the front he wrote “Wendi Pop Rock,” meaning the tape had rock songs mixed with pop songs and it was for me, Wendi. But I thought he was giving me a nickname and it just stuck.

“Don’t delete, don’t apologize” definitely remember this one always. If Chelsea Handler can do it so can you. Get it out, it’s your feelings and your art ;). Don’t mind the haters!
